What it is
The Bollinger squeeze breakout trades the transition from low volatility to high volatility. Bollinger Bands (a 20-bar moving average with bands two standard deviations above and below) tighten when price goes quiet. A squeeze is when the band width reaches its narrowest point in a long window. Quiet markets do not stay quiet; the first close outside the bands after a squeeze is taken as the start of the expansion, and the trade goes in that direction.
Rules
- Market / timeframe: BTC or ETH, 1-hour, 4-hour or daily candles.
- Squeeze: band width (upper minus lower, divided by the middle band) is the lowest it has been in the last 120 bars, at some point within the last 6 bars.
- Entry: the first close above the upper band (long) or below the lower band (short) while the squeeze condition is fresh.
- Stop: the middle band (the 20-bar average) at the time of entry.
- Target / exit: 3R, or the stop, or 60 bars elapsed.
- Position size: the table uses 1% of equity per trade. Squeezes are rare, so the sample sizes are small and the numbers are noisy.

How to read it: the daily and hourly versions were positive on both coins, the 4-hour version lost. Nine daily trades in three years is not a statistically meaningful sample; what the rows do show is the shape of the method. Win rates sit between 20% and 45%, and the edge, when it exists, comes from a few 3R winners. The maximum drawdown is small only because the rule trades so rarely.
When it fails
- Fake expansions. The first close outside the band is often the only one. Price pops out, pulls back to the middle band and stops you out, then goes the other way. That is why 4h lost: enough bars for the fake-out, not enough for a trend.
- Squeeze inside a larger range. When the daily chart is in a wide range, hourly squeezes expand into the range edge and die there. Check the higher timeframe before trusting a low-timeframe squeeze.
- Middle-band stop is wide. On a daily chart the 20-day average can be 8% to 10% away. That is fine at 1x and fatal at 20x.
- Small samples. A rule that fires nine times in three years cannot be judged by its result; judge it by whether the losses stayed at 1R.
Squeezes are easy to spot on RektChat's chart (add Bollinger Bands from the indicator menu) and the paper account lets you take every one of them without paying for the fake-outs.
