Averaging down versus adding to winners

Why adding to a losing leveraged position is a countdown, when adding to a winner is legitimate, and the one rule that settles it.

Averaging down on leverage

Adding to a losing position lowers your average entry and raises your liquidation risk at the same time. You are paying more to be wrong bigger. In spot markets averaging down is an investing decision; on a 50x perpetual it is a countdown with extra steps.

Adding to winners

Adding to a position that is working is fine if the new add has its own stop and the total risk stays inside your per-trade rule. If the add pushes total risk past the rule, it is simply more leverage with better public relations.

The rule

Never add to a position that is red. If the idea is still valid, close it and re-enter with a fresh plan and a fresh stop. You will find that, forced to re-decide from zero, you rarely take the trade again, which tells you what the add really was.
